Max Perutz Science Writing Award winner

Dr Maria Stavrou

October 2020: Many congratulations to Rowling Scholar Maria Stavrou, who has received a commendation in the 2020 MRC Max Perutz Science Writing competition.

The Max Perutz Science Writing Award aims to support the career development of current MRC PhD students, helping them build their skills to become tomorrow's leaders in discovery science. It also aims to encourage and recognise outstanding written communication.

Applicants, who are all MRC PhD students, were asked to write and submit an article about research in their field, discuss why it matters, and do this in a format that would hold the interest of a non-scientific reader.

Maria, is a Rowling Scholar, MRC clinical PhD fellow in CCBS; and is a member of the Euan MacDonald Centre for MND Research and of the UKDRI.

Her essay, entitled 'Undoing the Straitjacket' about her research into motor neuron disease, received a commendation, and was in the top 5 among 140 entries. You can read her essay here: Undoing the Straitjacket - Maria Stavrou Max Perutz Award essay (35.89 KB PDF)

The award this year was won by another University of Edinburgh PhD Student, Sarah Taylor, from the MRC Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine. Congratulations to Sarah!
