Dr Johnny Tam

Rowling Scholar (former)
Institute for Neuroscience and Cardiovascular Research, University of Edinburgh

Dr Johnny Tam investigated how we can use digital technology to improve the monitoring of neurological disease. Apps and smart devices have become integral to our daily lives. The aim was to harness their power to facilitate data collection and monitoring of illness. This will improve outcome measures for clinical research, and act as a supplement to routine clinical care.

Johnny undertook his undergraduate medical training in Cambridge and UCL and completed foundation training in Edinburgh and the southeast of Scotland. Before joining the Anne Rowling Clinic, he previously worked at the National CJD Research and Surveillance Unit.

Johnny completed his PhD in 2026. His thesis was titled "Deep learning digital speech biomarkers in motor neuron disease".
