Why did you decide to fundraise?
In 2018, Callum Muir’s world was turned upside down when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). The diagnosis was life-altering, but Callum remained determined to continue living fully — as a husband, father of two, and full-time worker.
By 2025, he found himself in a much stronger place mentally and physically, thanks to a new treatment regime. This renewed strength ignited a desire to give something back, especially to the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic at the University of Edinburgh — a place that had become central to his care and ongoing support.
“It was the first time I’d seen an MS consultant, and I had no idea about the Clinic or its origins,” Callum recalled. “But as soon as you walk in, it’s such a friendly atmosphere. It doesn’t feel like a hospital.”
What stood out to Callum was the Clinic’s unique combination of compassionate care and cutting-edge research. His involvement in the FutureMS study, which tracks newly diagnosed individuals to improve understanding of MS progression, only deepened his connection to the Clinic and solidified his decision to support their work through fundraising.

How did you raise the money?
Callum’s first major fundraising initiative came via a beer-focused podcast he co-hosts. A local brewery featured on the podcast — Stewart Brewing — was partnering with ‘Durty Events’ to host a 10K trail hop run. Seeing an opportunity, Callum signed up — and brought his podcast co-hosts along for the challenge.
“I thought, ‘You know what, let’s go for it.’” Despite the physical and emotional hurdles of recent years, he trained hard and completed the run in June 2025. Together, the podcast team raised over £1,600 through their JustGiving page: www.justgiving.com/page/teambeerfridge.
But Callum didn’t stop there. Shortly after the run, he turned a local quiz night at his dad’s bowling club into another chance to support the cause. With no entry fee and a simple appeal for donations, the event — complete with 14 teams, a raffle, and generous community spirit — brought in another £550.
In total, Callum raised over £2,000 for the Anne Rowling Clinic in 2025, supported not just by friends and family, but also by local businesses, breweries, and listeners of his podcast.

Fundraising wisdom:
Callum’s approach to fundraising is grounded in personal purpose and community involvement. His key piece of advice? Start where you are, and don’t be afraid to ask for support.
“It may not seem like a lot to the outside eye, but to us, it was unbelievable,” he says of their fundraising efforts. “We were really chuffed.”
Callum found motivation and momentum through doing something that felt meaningful — both to him and to those around him. Whether it was running a 10K, organising a quiz night, or simply sharing his story, each effort helped build awareness and raised crucial funds for a cause close to his heart.
He’s not done yet either. With a renewed sense of purpose and even an eye on increasing his running distance, Callum’s already thinking ahead to more fundraising events.
“I’ve kind of got the bug a little bit,” he says. “When I’ve got a reason — something to raise money for, something to work toward — I just feel in a much better place.”
His journey has even inspired others — including his niece, who completed her own charity 5K swim. For Callum, that’s what it’s all about: turning a difficult diagnosis into something bigger than himself, and making a lasting difference for others navigating MS.
